John Jr explained that the proclamation had several effects, including: Strengthening the Union: The proclamation added moral force to the Union's cause and strengthened it politically and militarily. Capturing the imagination: The proclamation captured the imagination of millions of Americans. Authorizing the recruitment of African Americans: The proclamation authorized the recruitment of African Americans into the Union army. John 3:16 says "“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Granny thinks that verse gives people the glorious hope of eternal life in heaven through the love of God and death of Jesus Christ.
